In remembrance of the importance of freshwater, World Water Day is celebrated yearly on 22 March 2019. This year’s international theme is “Leaving No One Behind” while here in the Philippines, our theme is “Hawak Kamay, Tubig Kaagapay.”
The celebration of World Water Day in the country was spearheaded by by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the River Basin Coordinating Office (RBCO) and the National Water Resources Board (NWRB), supported by water government agencies and institutions including LLDA. To herald in the week-long celebration of World Water Day, a kick-off activity was held on 15 March 2019 at the PRRC Livelihood and Mangrove Center, Baseco Compound, Manila.
Ms. Marian Soriano and Ms. Jessica Sumilang of LLDA presented lectures during the event. Ms. Marian gave a lecture on the importance of water and gave a detailed explanation regarding wastewater. On the other hand, Ms. Jessica elucidated the mandate of LLDA and provided information for promoting community awareness on Environmental Laws and Initiatives.
A sungka tournament was also held during the kick-off activity. Several staff from LLDA participated as well; Ms. Jennifer Tantay, Ms. Yolanda Rivera, Ms. Nida Amistoso, and Ms. Marcelina de la Peña. 3rd place was awarded to Ms. Nida, while Ms. Marcelina managed to nab the 2nd place.
The culmination of World Water Day celebration was led by Maynilad. On 22 March 2019, the World Water Day Awards was held at the Novotel Hotel, in Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City. In this award ceremony, awards were given to individuals and institution to honor them and recognize their efforts towards achieving water and water-environment sustainability. The award ceremony also aims to promote the mandate and advocacies and water and environment agencies, reinforce existing collaborations with external stake holders and form new ones, and highlight the importance of achieving maximum gain through various endeavors.
As for LLDA it doles out the “Kampeon ng Lawa” award to its deserving partners who devoted their energy, efforts, and resources in the restoration of the balance ecology of Laguna Lake. Similar recognition is given by other agencies to their partners who have done the same for the environment. This year, LLDA has given the “Kampeon ng Lawa” award to the following partner agencies:
