SANITARY LANDFILL CATEGORY I

The eastern portion of the1.2 -hectare lot corresponding to about 5,000m2 is designed for the Category 1 disposal facility of the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC). The usable space has been subdivided into the 4 waste cells with an estimated capacity of 20,000m3, internal access road, wash bay, leachate pond and open space for temporary location of windrows. Designated cell areas not yet scheduled for development shall also be utilized for the windrows.

The facility shall make use of the locally available clay at the site. The 5,000m2 section developed into a disposal facility shall be enclosed by about 350m of perimeter fence. The 110-meter long eastern edge of the disposal site shall be protected by a 2- meter high CHB fence. The remaining 240 meters along the hilly section of the site shall be bounded by shrubs linked by barbed wire. A steel gate shall be constructed at the northern edge of the facility. The western hilly side of the facility shall be provided with a tree buffer.

Compared to the total compacted volume (16,000 m3) of residual, hazardous and other wastes and considering the 20% airspace to be occupied by the soil cover, the overall waste and soil cover volume would be about 19,400 m3. The site therefore can accommodate the waste of Kalayaan for the next15 years without the biodegradable and recyclable components.

MATERIALS RECOVERY FACILITY (WITH COMPOSTING)

This facility processes the non-biodegradable and biodegradable materials. Located at the eastern edge of the disposal facility, it will have two facilities: 1) for sorting and storing recovered recyclable, and 2) for composting.

PORTABLE WASTE BINS

Each of the 3 barangays shall be provided with 3 drop centers or portable bins to support and facilitate the collection of recyclable wastes. Each bin shall have a capacity of 2.5 m3 and shall be deployed at barangay sections with limited spaces.
